Can You Run A Business With Family Members, And Remain Open?
One thing is for sure. No matter what happens if you have family members working for you, as sure as the sun rises in the East and sets in the West, those family members will still be your family.
They may rip you off by stealing from the till.
Not show up for work on numerouse acasions
Argue with each other at work
Argue with each other after work
Fight
Argue with you at work
Argue with you after work
Is it worth it, No its not.
Just maybe you might find one family member that treats the business like its there own and have a feeling of pride that you have given them the opportunity to give them a job. Great you have one happy employee.
How many would you have to go through to find this perfect family member.
Have I ever employed a family member, yes I have and my secret to you is this;
Part time only.
In my case I have never given a family member more than a week at a time and that was probably a day or two too long. However it vis a ideal amount of time because if its too short and everything is running sweet, you are tempted to keep them on permanantly.
Wait the full week and nature usually takes its cause and as you agreed to only one week there is no animosity when you end the week and they move on untill you need them next time.
Another area to keep in mind with family members working for you is the inlaw, brother in law, sister in law side of life.
Now here is real danger, your sisters husband makes out he’s the sweet innocent husband and all he does is flirt with the customers and tell you how to run your business.
What do you do, if you confont him he will make you look like a liar to your sister as she loves him to death and would never believe your story as she has always thought that you had a crush on him for years.
