Radio City Music Hall

One of the largest entertainment venues in New York, Manhattan, Radio City Music Hall lies at the heart of the city’s Rockefeller Center. Back in the late 70s this used to be a major city attraction and a landmark at the same time, but many things have changed ever since although the venue still enjoys popularity. The complex as such was developed during the Depression years at the initiative of John D. Rockefeller Jr., who intended to create a new location for the Metropolitan Opera. The plans were dropped after the fall of the stock market in 1929. As for the name of the Radio City Music Hall, it comes from the first tenants, the Radio Corporation of America.

Films and theater performances, these are the two purposes that the Radio City Music Hall serves, and when it was opened there was no other larger similar entertainment building in the world. The interior decorations were also considered spectacular with Rococo design, geometric decorative elements, incorporated glass and aluminum and an incredibly complex system of elevators that few organizations had at the time. The Radio City Music Hall was closed for renovation until the beginning of the 80s when it was once again open to the public.

At present, the Radio City Music Hall serves for movie premieres, live stage performances and concerts. The Music Christmas show is one tradition preserved since the first days of the theater. The most famous part of the show is the Rockettes, a team dance performed by women with a high-quality precision. The same Radio City Music Hall is the annual location for important events like the Grammy Awards, the MTV Video Music Awards or Daytime Emmy Awards shows, but several bands have also recorded some albums on the premises too. This is the case of Heaven and Hell and Dream Theater who concerted and made live CDs/DVDs here.

Plenty of other occasional events are held here all year round, as the hall is available for rental to a wide range of entertainers who are willing to pay to perform in this Manhattan location. For tourists, Radio City Music Hall definitely remains a sight to see if you visit New York; the place is an important element of American culture and a seat for lots of significant cultural events. Radio City Music Hall is actually part of the popular culture, and it has appeared in lots of famous movies like The Godfather, Annie or A.I. Artificial Intelligence.
